Dr. Kourosh Maddahi Uses Biocompatible Dentistry

We’ve all heard that we shouldn’t eat fish more than a few times per week because of the amount of mercury that is contained within our oceans at present. At the same time, however, traditional dentistry uses the same hazardous material to fill the holes in our teeth. The truth is, most “silver” tooth fillings are 50% mercury. Depending on the size of the filling, the amount of mercury used to fill a cavity can equal the amount found in a thermometer. Now, why do we limit ourselves to the amount of fish we consume per week, and yet simultaneously fill our mouths with the same toxic substance we are trying to avoid, making it present in our teeth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Research has shown that fillings expose a person to more mercury than from all other sources, and as mercury is one of the most toxic substances on earth, these findings are not to be taken lightly. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry in Los Angeles has moved on from the dark age of mercury fillings.

Beverly Hills Dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, who practices cosmetic dentistry in Los Angeles, uses biocompatible dentistry to ensure the safety and wellbeing of his patients. Rather than knowingly expose his patients to harmful toxins, Dr. Maddahi uses alternatives such as tooth colored fillings made of resin or porcelain and inlays and outlays made of porcelain. These are not only safer, but also more cosmetically attractive as they do not make the teeth appear gray as silver fillings often do.

For those who have had the misfortune of being given a silver filling, Dr. Maddahi is able to remove the offending material, unless the patient is nursing or lactating. Only dentists who have been trained by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, like Dr. Maddahi, are qualified to remove toxic filling material. Dr. Maddahi believes strongly in biocompatible dentistry and will be happy to switch out your harmful fillings. Silver tooth filling removal is an extremely important step to take in regaining control of your dental health.

Dr. Kourosh Maddahi’s skill in biocompatible dentistry ensures that his patients are assured of the quality, safety, and aesthetic appeal of their dental work. Dr. Maddahi has built and revitalized many beautiful smiles that make people feel great.

Sensitivity to Dental Materials Testing Offered by Beverly Hills Dentist

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

In the Los Angeles area, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills dentist, considers testing patients with biocompatibility sensitivity very important before choosing the dental materials he will use for fillings and other dental work.

Society seems to be coming all the more aware of the possible effects of toxic products – those used in food like MSG, decorations like lead, and on and on. Most recently there has been widespread concern about the ingredients in inoculations for flu and other illnesses.

It is also highly imperative to recognize the consequence of certain chemicals and substances that are employed by dentists in dental care. Some individuals have discovered sensitivity to dental materials already in use and some have found that these materials are actually toxic to their bodies with consequences ranging from breathing difficulties, headaches or dizziness to debilitating illness.

Testing is available to discover sensitivity to certain compounds. A well-known example of toxic dental materials, mercury amalgam fillings, has been well documented to be an irritant for many dental patients.

Dr. Tom McGuire, DDS, is an innovative dental researcher and principal in holistic dental wellness. He explains, “Mercury amalgam fillings continuously release mercury vapor, the most poisonous, naturally occurring, non-radioactive substance on earth, into your body. The mercury amalgams emit contributes to over 100 health issues. “

Dr. McGuire further clarifies, “For some, the effects of dental materials on their health can be significant. Today we are exposed to thousands of potentially toxic substances that didn’t exist 50, or even 20, years ago and every year more are added to the list. The effects on health of man-made substances vary from person to person. Some may not be affected, while, for others, the same substance may be toxic and elicit a harmful reaction. The source of these substances range from what is put into the food we eat, to household chemicals, pesticides, toxic substances resulting from the manufacturing process, auto emissions, and products and materials used in medical and dental treatment.”

Serum biocompatibility testing is a laboratory screening procedure employed to assist in the identification of sensitivity issues to various chemical groups and families of compounds in an individual patient. “I suggest to many patients that they take advantage of serum biocompatibility testing.”, explains Dr. Maddahi.  “It is possible to use a serum blood specimen to determine what one’s ‘least toxic’ replacement dental materials might be. We use the term ‘least toxic’ because any foreign substance introduced into the body will, to some degree, aggravate the immune system. This is the purpose of the immune system, to ward off substances not naturally found in the body.”

Traditional immunological methods utilized produce test results that report on almost 7000 trade-named products and 100 chemical groups and varieties. The test will specifically determine existing systemic allergies that may be associated with these bio-materials and the restorative products that are utilized for the repair and reconstruction of teeth, bone structures, joints and other body tissue.

Therefore once a patient has been tested, he is able to avoid highly toxic products in his system and Beverly Hills dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, can choose, with confidence, the dental materials that will be the best to be used for fillings and other dental work.

Biocompatible Dentistry Reduces Adverse Reaction in Patients

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

As public awareness continues to grow regarding the effects of pesticides, air and water pollution, smoking and many other hazards to our health –there is also increasing information and concern regarding how materials used in modern dentistry affect us. At the Beverly Hills office of Los Angeles cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, patients can be confident that materials used in the care and repair of their teeth will be in harmony with their bodies; biocompatible.

As dentistry evolves, materials available for dental restoration are continually being developed. In the past ten years dentistry has had as one of its goals – the development of materials that would as closely as possible duplicate natural tooth structure in both appearance and physical properties while minimizing the potential for negative side effects.

Simply put, biocompatible materials are those substances that will work well with your body and have the least reactive effect on it. Some materials, such as mercury, have been identified as having adverse reactions in a broad spectrum of people, while other materials are reactive to only individuals with sensitivities to them.

Dental Amalgam is a commonly used dental restorative material, first put to use in France in the 1800s. Used for fillings, it is a mixture of mercury and at least one other metal. Mercury is one of the most toxic metals found in nature. There has been a dramatic decline in the use of dental amalgam because of the increasing evidence of mercury’s negative effects on health as well as its visual disharmony (the metallic color does not blend well with tooth structure) and its pollution of the environment as a result of mercury emissions from dental practice amalgam waste and cremation of deceased.

Some dental materials used can cause physical aggravation in the form of headaches, breathing difficulties, dizziness and in extreme cases debilitating illnesses. Any foreign substance introduced into the body will cause an aggravation to the immune system. It is the immune system’s job to ward off foreign substances not normally found in the body. It is advised to determine which dental materials will produce the least reaction and highest tolerance by our immune system.

By using a serum blood specimen it is possible to get comprehensive information on what a person will be least reactive to. Testing is done to explore substances that will be used for composite fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, veneers, cements, etc. Results from this test make up over thirty pages of evaluation, of approximately 9100 different dental compounds, revealing which substances tested are suitable to a patient and which are not.

When Dr. Kourosh Maddahi plans his approach to dental restoration and the materials he will utilize, aside from the high priority placed on biocompatibility, he also takes into consideration the size of the defect needing repair, the function of the area, the biting surface, strength, durability and his high aesthetic standards.

In choosing a dentist, it is essential to confirm that the practice does not use broadly known toxic materials such as mercury and has the means to test for those materials your individual immune system will not tolerate.

Whether you need porcelain veneers, implants, crowns or fillings – Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi combines his ultra-modern technologically cutting-edge equipment, his commitment to biocompatible dentistry - and the touch of an artist, to create beautiful natural looking teeth that are healthy and comfortable for you, now and in the future.

A Day at the Dentist, Like No Other Dental Appointment She’s Heard Of

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, combines new techniques and advanced tools and here T.S. tells her story, how she found that dentistry does not have to be stressful and painful, but can be a pleasurable experience.

I just came from the most pleasant dental experience EVER!  Yes, I did say pleasant and dental in the same sentence!  Me, who is not entirely uncomfortable with going to the dentist (only had one cavity thus far), but afraid to go as it has been five years since my last appointment!

Here’s what happened.  I have personally known Dr. Maddahi through my last employer in Beverly Hills.  I liked him and knew he was a dentist.  Whenever I smiled around him, I kept my mouth kind of shut for fear of him seeing my teeth!  Not that they were crooked, but unkempt!!!  Funny huh?

So, finally I decide to go in for a cleaning (I just had a baby a year ago and was waiting until after I was breastfeeding to go since I KNEW I had a cavity) and finally get myself a new dentist in the LA area.  Of course he had to be in Beverly Hills and I was thinking BIG BUCKS!  Keep reading…

I arrive to what looks like a spa!  Yes, very soothing. Staffed with lovely, friendly, and caring people and surrounded by aesthetics.  I was not exactly ready to confront my cleaning since I have known the Doctor for over a year now.  To my surprise, dentistry has changed!  Instead of picking at my teeth with a scraper the hygienist used a tool that gently removed the buildup on my teeth and another that polished them.  NO PAIN!  Next was the dreaded full set of x-rays.  (I have a small mouth and this part normally hurts me.)  The x-ray machine is all digital – 90% less radiation than the conventional equipment!  (And if I ever need dental work outside of his office, he can e-mail them to the other doctor.)

After the cleaning and x-rays was the dental exam with the doctor.  Dreaded because I KNOW I have a cavity.  He carefully looks over all my teeth.  The whole way through explaining to me what he is using and doing.  Educating me.  He couldn’t see the cavity on the x-rays, but explains that if the cavity were between the teeth or into the deeper part of the tooth, only then would it show up on x-ray.  Was there hope that there wasn’t a cavity?  No.  He has this laser that finds all cavities on the surface of the tooth.  I thought it was pretty cool, no more picking with that metal tool.  I felt nothing with the laser, not a single thing, just a light in my mouth, same feeling as shining a flashlight in your mouth to scare people when you were little!  But, then it beeped and we found the cavity!  Ugh!

Ready to schedule the next appointment to come back to remove it, Dr. Maddahi told me he could do it right now.  Looking for reasons to leave I said, “I am breastfeeding, so I will wait until I am done”.  He explained there is no anesthetic needed.  It’s painless.  “OK, let’s do it, promise me it won’t hurt?”  He smiled and said yes.

Sure enough, it was painless and no anesthetic!  I was done in 15 minutes, and the best part was NO DRILL!  How you ask?  The cavity is removed with air and powder so only the cavity is removed and not the good part of the tooth.

As I mentioned above, Dr. Maddahi is educating me as we go on the most state- of-the-art innovations.  He even has all the current biological dentistry (mercury free) equipment, air filters and procedures for removing mercury.  He explained that he removed two mercury fillings in a lady’s extreme back teeth and replaced them with biocompatible materials in 35 minutes and she went directly around the corner to lunch without a swollen tongue or crooked smile from anesthetic and was able to talk normally and eat immediately!  Very cool!  Not that I need any of that, this was only my second cavity ever in my 32 years, but I was very interested in knowing since I was going to start sending people to him for these reasons!

Last step, the bill!  I did dread that as we are in Beverly Hills after all!  Knowing that I had to pay for the treatment and his office staff would bill the insurance company for me (saving me the paper work and putting in all the codes so that I would get the best return rate for my visit) I asked the dreaded question, “How much will my visit be?”  Remember I had a new exam, new full mouth x-rays, cleaning and a cavity filled with all state of the art equipment!  Instead of being shocked I was pleasantly surprised!

Funny, because I always felt it was unfair to pay for the pain a dentist can dish out.  Quite the contrary, my entire experience was not only pain free, drug free, and noise free, but the bill was painless as well and completely in line with my local dentist in Redondo Beach.  Now this is a miracle!

Amazing!

Mercury-Free Dentistry Means We Never Use Mercury

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Our Dr. Maddahi never uses mercury. Why?

According to the IAOMT, International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, “many people do not realize the “silver” amalgam fillings are 50% mercury. A large filling may contain as much mercury as a thermometer. Mercury vaporizes easily at room temperature, and in this state, is odorless, colorless and tasteless. Inhaled mercury vapor is readily absorbed into the bloodstream. The World Health Organization has concluded that dental fillings contribute more mercury to a person’s body than all other sources of mercury combined. Mercury is a powerful poison. Published research demonstrates that mercury is more toxic than lead, cadmium or arsenic. No amount of exposure to mercury vapor can be considered harmless. Especially considering its cumulative effect.”

Dr. Thomas McGuire, DDS, has been an innovator and leader in preventive dental education for over 30 years. He states, “Silver (mercury amalgam) fillings are hazardous to your health. The reason they are is because poisonous mercury vapor is continually being released from these fillings and stored in the body.  It is scientifically proven that mercury is the most poisonous naturally occurring, non-radioactive, substance on our planet. Mercury is far more toxic than any of the other heavy metals, including arsenic, lead and cadmium. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is NO safe level of mercury! There is no ‘good or safe’ mercury.

“Thus, no matter what you have heard from a pro-amalgam dentist, or from the ADA, about the safety of amalgams, mercury is continuously released from them and they can never, ever, ever be considered ‘safe’ nor ‘harmless’. To even suggest that mercury, in any amount, is safe, or harmless, is inaccurate, misleading, and hazardous to the health of those who believe what this organization and its supporting dentists are telling them.”

What is Serum Biocompatibility Testing? There are certain individuals who find they have headaches, trouble breathing, dizziness and even debilitating illnesses that have been discovered to be caused by dental materials to which they are allergic. One substance might be toxic to one body that is not toxic to another person.

Therefore, Dr. Maddahi recommends Serum Biocompatibility Testing for chemical sensitivity before selecting dental materials used for fillings and other dental work. See Dr. Kourosh Maddahi today for testing and your solution to a mercury-free smile. He is your Los Angeles area mercury-free dentist.
