Drill-free Dentistry – Air Abrasion, It’s Like a Mini-Sandblaster to Remove Decay

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

When thinking of the dentist, there are a few negative images that may come to mind. Painful drilling. Loud whining of the drill and that smell. Long appointments. Aftertaste, and subsiding pain. At the high-tech office of Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, a Los Angeles dentist in Beverly Hills those images, for many, have become a thing of the past.

Now there is a way to fill a cavity without the teeth being drilled!

Drill-free dentistry, by air-abrasion, acts like a mini-sandblaster that’s precisely aimed to remove decay using a fine aluminum oxide (baking soda) powder. There’s no whining drills, no burning smell (the teeth never get hot), no vibration and no anesthetic required.

Drill-free dentistry is paired with another recent high-tech addition to dentistry, DIAGNOdent. It’s a laser system that discovers decayed areas prior to their appearance as a hole on the surface of the tooth, it locates decayed areas that x-rays cannot detect.

A patient of Dr. Maddahi illustrates the procedure, “I just came from the most pleasant dental experience EVER!  Yes, I did say pleasant and dental in the same sentence!  Me, who is not entirely uncomfortable with going to the dentist (only had one cavity thus far), but afraid to go as it has been 5 years since my last appointment! After the cleaning and x-rays was the dental exam with the doctor.  Dreaded because I KNOW I have a cavity.  He carefully looks over all my teeth.

“He couldn’t see the cavity on the x-rays. Was there hope that there wasn’t a cavity?  No.  He has this laser that finds all cavities on the surface of the tooth.  I thought it was pretty cool, no more picking with that metal tool.  I felt nothing with the laser, not a single thing, just a light in my mouth. But, then it beeped and we found the cavity!  Ugh!

“Ready to schedule the next appointment to come back to remove it, Dr. Maddahi told me he could do it right now.  Looking for reasons to leave I said, ‘I am breastfeeding, so I will wait until I am done.’  He explained there is no anesthetic needed.  It’s painless.  ‘OK, let’s do it, promise me it won’t hurt?’  He smiled and said yes.

“Sure enough, it was painless and no anesthetic!  I was done in 15 minutes, and the best part was NO DRILL!  How you ask?  The cavity is removed with air and powder so only the cavity is removed and not the good part of the tooth.”

Prior to this high-tech advancement a dentist would need to remove healthy tooth structure in order to clean out the cavity in a tooth. With micro-dentistry’s delicate air abrasion technique this same decay can be precisely removed without the loss of healthy tooth structure.  Sealants are then used to securely bond to the tooth, protecting the tooth from any further decay.

An excellent variety of high-tech dentistry is available at the Los Angeles dentist office of Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, located in Beverly Hills. He creates beautiful, natural smiles using gentle dentistry.

Only the Highest Standards for This Los Angeles Cosmetic Dentist

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Using the newest, most advanced procedures and equipment allows Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Los Angeles cosmetic dentist, to offer the highest standards in his Beverly Hills dentist office. Dr. Maddahi stays ahead of the curve to ensure that his patients get the finest, most natural looking, beautiful dental restorations.

Often new smiles are required for personal or professional situations, especially considering the quality of smile that is considered an acceptable standard these days. No longer are yellow or grey teeth considered satisfactory as with missing or even crooked teeth - a person’s image is very affected by the smile with which he or she may greet others.

Cosmetic dentistry can quickly and easily solve dental flaws and often with little or no pain. Dr. Maddahi embarks on all treatment with a gentle dental standard - ensuring the least pain and stress possible for each and every patient. Some of the high tech equipment used by Dr. Maddahi greatly enhances the pain-free procedures.

For example, each time an x-ray is needed in his office, digital x-ray technology is employed. The digital x-ray has shortened the time it takes to complete dental treatment. It takes only three seconds from when the camera is clicked to when the X-ray image is transferred to the computer screen! When using digital X-rays the dentist has the ability to magnify, colorize, and alter the density of the image.

The addition of the laser in the dental office has a myriad of applications. It can be used for soft tissue surgery, curing and sterilizing with the benefit of no anesthetic needed, or only a light topical anesthetic to begin. It uses the power of light to vaporize soft tissue without bleeding, giving a benefit to the patient that is more effective and less traumatic than conventional methods.

With porcelain veneers it is now possible to correct the alignment of teeth, in most cases, without braces. Additionally, the form and color of teeth can be improved. Porcelain veneers have become the cosmetic dentist’s veneer of choice because due to their luster and translucency they have a very life-like appearance, which is not achievable with composite veneers.

Additionally, porcelain veneers are far less likely to stain and are a more durable material when bonded to tooth structure. They will not fracture under strain like some composite veneers do.

Cosmetic dentistry can be a quick solution for people who are in the need of an upgrade to their look. Porcelain veneers take only a few days to completely transform that smile. An appointment for a tooth whitening, which takes about an hour, can also make a dramatic change in a person’s smile.

Beautiful smile, natural and beautiful teeth - white and sparkly, can say so much about an individual. Successful, healthy, even happier is how it has been found that people are perceived after a beautiful, natural smile reconstruction.

Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, top Los Angeles cosmetic dentist, invites you to visit his warm and welcoming offices in Beverly Hills. He offers the finest in cosmetic dentistry using gentle methods creating beautiful, natural new smiles.

One of the First Things That’s Noticed is a Bright Smile

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Whiter teeth are most often associated with beauty and a healthy lifestyle. Grungy, dirty looking grey or yellow teeth can give a poor impression and with a simple, fast and short dental appointment, teeth can be sparkling white. Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, uses only the leading whitener, Zoom® 2 Advanced Power Plus Chairside Tooth Whitening.

First impressions are greatly influenced by the smile. A person’s smile is one of the first things noticed upon a meeting with someone. Age, diet and environment are all factors that will fade a sparkling smile. After only a few years of smoking or drinking coffee and wine, certain people may find that their teeth are lacking the youthful and healthy pearly-white look they once had.

Some will give up smoking and find that despite regular brushing and dental cleanings, the teeth remain quite discolored. Many find that the original gleaming white look of their youth does not return easily. Of course, many individuals choose to continue drinking coffee, smoking, or consuming other staining foods. Unfortunately, brushing with the whitening toothpastes currently on the market will not make your teeth as white as they can be.

Over-the-counter home whitening systems can be less effective, or create an unreal or imbalanced whitening. Beverly Hills dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi says, “Everyone loves a bright white smile, and there certainly are numerous products and procedures available to help improve the look of yours.  While some people are satisfied with the result that they get from brushing and regular cleaning at the dentist office, I recommend in-office Zoom! whitening system when my patients choose to go beyond routine maintenance to make their smile look brighter.”

The Zoom! whitening system works to lighten the staining of enamel and dentin.  (The calcified tissue around the pulp cavity of a tooth is called dentin. It makes up the bulk of the tooth and is harder and denser than bone.) This method uses of a combination of whitener product and special light wave treatments.

Once the patient is comfortably seated – with a movie to watch, if desired – the first step is to ensure the soft tissues of the mouth are not exposed. “We use a protective gel on the gums or a rubber shield to protect the soft oral tissues during chair side bleaching,” says Dr. Maddahi. “After the Zoom! gel is covering the teeth uniformly, a special bright light is directed at it for about one hour. The properties of the Zoom! teeth whitening gel and the energy produced by the light produce chemical reactions that lead to tooth whitening.”

While there are other tooth whitening alternatives available, such as at-home bleaching and whitening toothpastes, many people have found those products to be less than effective or that they just don’t work.  Dr. Maddahi explains, “We are most likely to get a natural looking, bright white smile if I am treating the patient in the office.”

One no longer has to live with off-color, dull looking teeth.  Teeth can be many shades brighter in just one office visit. Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentist, genuinely recommends this leading whitener, Zoom 2 Advanced Power Plus Chairside Tooth Whitening.
