Ouch, it Hurts when I Chew and My Jaw Aches When I Wake!

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Recently, a new discovery has been made in the treatment of mouth, face and head pain. This pain is called TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder or TMD. Dentists are fully trained in analyzing pain in and around the mouth, and they can determine if it is from a cavity, an oral infection, or TMD.

Located in the mouth are two of the most complicated joints in the human body: the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). This joint not only allows the mouth to open, but also for the lower jaw to move forward and back, and side to side. Besides the joints, there are many muscles, ligaments, discs and bones involved in those motions. As time wears on these body parts, sometimes a person can get pain in or near his or her jaw.

TMD can be caused by several different scenarios. It can be from arthritis, an impact injury to the jaw, one’s bite (alignment of teeth), night-time tooth grinding or stress. Sometimes it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of TMD, but there are certain treatments for TMJ problems that can make a huge improvement.

TMJ treatments can include massage in the area of the jaw pain to help loosen up the muscles, in addition to a handling of one’s poor posture – which can lead to misalignment of the neck and back, which are connected to the jaw muscles.

If the dentist determines the pain is a result of poor bite/tooth alignment, braces may be used; tooth reshaping is another popular option. Some dentists will provide pain reducing medicine that will temporarily treat the situation. For certain situations, a dentist may recommend a tooth guard to prevent night-time tooth grinding. Depending on the patient’s particular situation, the dentist may recommend a variety of workable solutions.

Los Angeles area Kourosh Maddahi, DDS, Beverly Hills dentist, will work carefully and thoroughly with you to find the cause of your TMJ and therefore resolve your situation. In the twenty-plus years of practice he has solved many TMJ problems for his patients.

Is it True? Can What’s in Your Mouth Really Make You Sick?

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Lately the news has been full of startling stories that link oral disease and oral bacteria to an array of serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Dentists have always taught the relationship between general health and oral health.

“Persons who suffer with dry mouth—a lack of saliva—whether from age, disease or medications, are at increased risk for tooth decay.”, explains our Dr. Kourosh Maddahi.  “And if you have oral pain or can’t eat properly, you won’t get the nutrition your body needs to stay healthy.  It’s not news that the mouth is connected to the body. The mouth often times is the location used to diagnose, make a prognosis, treat and intervene on a host of diseases.”

For example, some researchers have found that periodontitis (the advanced form of gum disease that can cause tooth loss) is associated with bacterial pneumonia, stroke and cardiovascular disease. Other research has found that pregnant women with periodontitis may be at increased risk for delivering babies that are pre-term, have low birth weight or both.

Dr. Maddahi further explains, “Although reports suggest that periodontitis may contribute to these conditions, you should know that just because two conditions occur at the same time, it doesn’t necessarily mean that one causes the other. These conditions and diseases are complex.  Oral health must be considered an important part of overall health but scientists are still studying how closely the two are connected.”

Make sure to tell your dentist about changes in your oral health, including any recent illnesses or chronic conditions. Provide an updated health history including medication use, both prescription and over-the-counter products. And if you smoke, talk to your dentist about options for quitting smoking. Beverly Hills dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, has several options he’d like to share.

Porcelain veneers are the single most popular cosmetic dental procedure.

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

In looking at the options available in cosmetic dentistry, the single most popular procedure is the application of porcelain veneers. In just a few visits a remarkable and lasting enhancement can be gained. Our Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, is internationally sought for his natural, beautiful veneer work.

A veneer is by definition ‘an outer layer fixed to something for decoration or protection’. Porcelain veneers are very thin layers of dental grade porcelain affixed to the surface of teeth. They are strong and durable, usually lasting up to twenty years. They have the same luminosity as natural tooth enamel, and when expertly applied are indistinguishable from the tooth.

Veneers are used to repair chipped or damaged teeth, to reshape oddly shaped teeth, to fill gaps between teeth and to handle extreme discoloration or staining. Properly applied they can bring about a dramatic enhancement of the teeth and smile.

The first step is a preparation of the teeth that will receive veneers. So as to look completely naturally sized and not to interfere with talking, eating and smiling the surface of the teeth must be prepared to accommodate the new veneers. This preparation has a minimal impact on existing tooth structure.

Next, a dental impression is formed. This is the guide used by the dental veneer lab to prepare the final veneers. The lab works with the impression, color and shade data as well as our Dr. Maddahi’s direction to create the custom veneer. The veneers are then checked for fit, color match and, most importantly, patient approval. They are then permanently affixed to the teeth. This procedure usually only takes two or three visits to complete!

The product is a new and beautiful natural smile!

Our Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentist Partners with his Patients…

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Cosmetic means ‘intended to improve somebody’s physical appearance’, so cosmetic dentistry aims, broadly, to improve the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums and smile. Not everyone is born with perfect teeth and life itself can take its toll because of accidents, disease or just plain wear and tear.

Our Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, is one of the few in his field who really partners with his clients. The philosophy is simple: make people comfortable, answer all their questions, really listen and grant each and every patient the importance they deserve whilst working out and obtaining the best results for them. To enhance this experience, the offices are relaxed and friendly, the décor is that of a spa providing a soothing and inviting atmosphere; certainly not the traditional dental office environment.

Dr. Maddahi’s emphasis is on pain-free treatment. This means keeping treatment that could be painful to an absolute minimum and using highly localized and minimized pain-management. For example, the doctor employs The Wand, which is a pen-shaped anesthetic delivery system so precise that only the exact amount of anesthetic is delivered to the exact area that needs it, meaning no numb mouth and minimal discomfort. He also uses a drill-free system that enables removal of decay without burning of the tooth or removal of healthy tooth structure.

In cosmetic dentistry the emphasis is on improving the appearance of the teeth, gums and smile. Whatever your motivation – there is no reason, financial or otherwise, why you shouldn’t avail yourself of these services.

Perhaps going to a cosmetic dentist sounds like vanity… not always so!

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Have the words ‘cosmetic dentist’ ever conjured up an image of people who create unnaturally perfect, white and, bluntly, fake looking teeth? Perhaps going to a cosmetic dentist sounds like vanity or a refusal to take things as they are.

Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, understands that for an individual not blessed with perfect teeth at birth – namely most people – this is really an unfair judgment. Same for someone who may have stained or discolored teeth as a result of medication, coffee, cigarettes, wine etc. And there are those individuals who may have lost teeth or suffered damage to them.

These are some of the people for whom cosmetic dentistry can really transform a life.

Our Dr. Maddahi’s approach is flexible and individualized. As anyone who comes to his practice has their own reasons for doing so, Dr. Maddahi will work to address those exact needs and do so in a manner that parallels what you want. Years of experience, training, and most importantly a highly artistic eye are all focused on creating a solution that is right for you. After all, not everyone wants a thousand watt smile. But some do!

So the accent is on a natural, beautiful smile. Perhaps the ultimate in cosmetic dentistry is dental work that no-one notices as ‘work’. This would characterize the art of our Dr Maddahi very well. The work is done and all anyone else can say is how much better you look, how much healthier or happier - whether your admirer can say why or not!

Why is spa dentistry the future of dental care?

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

So what is spa dentistry? Our Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, has pioneered a complete rethink of what it is to go to the dentist. The offices don’t look like a hospital. They’re actually a place that’s relaxing to be in, aesthetic and soothing, so being there isn’t stressful.

Dr. Maddahi tells people what being done and why – to answer their questions and treat them like people and not ‘patients’. In fact, the whole staff treat you like a friend. Their aim is to put you at ease.

He shows you what’s going on, right now in your mouth, with digital displays. His practice uses the latest diagnostic tools, tiny intra-oral cameras, laser cavity detection that picks up what the dental pick can’t and digital x-rays that are instantly viewable. The philosophy is simple: when you understand something it doesn’t worry you. Our Dr. Maddahi has spent many years putting openness into practice.

As important is that your experience be pain-free. The doctor uses a drill-free technology. It doesn’t require an anesthetic in most cases, and doesn’t produce any burning or vibration. If it’s absolutely necessary, we’ll use an anesthetic system that only delivers what’s needed and do it so precisely that you won’t notice it.

You can watch a movie while it’s going on and get a massage to relax the muscles and tissue in the area, so you really are at ease. It’d be a matter of personal experience to try spa dentistry and find out that going to the dentist can actually be pleasant!
