Why do so many people get their teeth whitened these days?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

That is actually a good question and we’d have to check with a lot of people in order to give you the exact answer to that question. But, our Beverly Hills teeth whitening specialist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, has a pretty good idea…

Teeth are subject to discoloration from coffee, cigarettes, wine as well as certain medications. With the advent of cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening being such a fast, simple and economical procedure, it’s hard NOT to get teeth whitened!

Discolored teeth can create a poor impression for a professional, make a person hide their smile or make someone appear older than their actual years. Using non-toxic compounds for laser tooth whitening technology, the teeth are rapidly and effectively lightened.

Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, suggests Zoom2! whitening technology. This in office procedure takes about an hour and the teeth are lightened immediately.

Tooth Whitening in Beverly Hills

This is a gel process that uses hydrogen peroxide and an activator together in proportion for your teeth. Both the upper and lower teeth are whitened at the same time and a special bleaching lamp is used to activate the whitening gel and speed up the teeth whitening process.

This only takes about 15 minutes for the activator and light to do its work. Depending on the color of your teeth, the process is repeated usually two more times during your visit.

Often first, a cleaning is done to remove plaque, the film of bacteria and mucus, from the surface of your teeth and if need be, also a soothing wash is applied to neutralize the area and prevent sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks afterwards.

A long-lasting, brighter smile is possible with Zoom! Teeth Whitening System.  It is safe, fast and effective.

In California, Porcelain Crowns are a Favorite for Cosmetic Dentistry, Why?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

It’s common for our patients to wonder about the different dental solutions offered in our office. Porcelain crowns are used in California not only to obtain that coveted “Beverly Hills smile”, but also for the beautiful, natural smiles that are favored by the more nature-loving Californians. Our Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, explains that the durability, strength and ability to match the natural look of teeth, is why porcelain is the foremost choice for many dentists.
Crowns are used to protect a tooth and give the ability to restore the tooth to its normal size and shape. This, of course, improves the appearance of the tooth and reinforces it adding strength. Used to support and cover a tooth with a large cavity or to protect a weak tooth from breaking or to restore one that has been broken, a crown is also employed to cover badly shaped or discolored teeth.
Porcelain is a favorite material for dental work as it’s significantly stronger than other dental materials and it can look exactly like a real tooth. Also known as ceramic, when used for fillings and other dental work the material can perfectly match other teeth.
When most of the tooth is missing or strength is needed for chewing, jacket crowns made of porcelain may be suggested. They are known to have the most realistic look of all crown restorations. Porcelain jackets are pure porcelain crowns placed on a fully prepared tooth. So whether you are looking for that “Beverly Hills smile” or a more natural, beautiful smile, your choice of porcelain crowns may be the best choice for your dental work.

How Important is Schooling and Training when Choosing a Dentist?

Friday, July 18th, 2008

This is an important question with so many dentists to choose from, so many advertising for one thing or another and so many unknown factors. Here at Dr. Kourosh Maddahi’s Beverly Hills dentist office we offer the highest quality cosmetic dentistry available and combine that with excellence of communication and care that is unrivaled.

The quality of a dentist’s work has been found to be modified by three points. First is his basic dental education – where did he get his degree and what specialties did he study? Our Dr. Maddahi received his BS degree in Psychobiology* (with honors) from the University of California at Los Angeles, one of the leading universities in the world. His DDS degree is from the University Of Southern California School Of Dentistry, which is of course, the other world renowned university in Los Angeles known for its educational excellence.

Continuing education is a vital element in the quality of a dentist’s work. Dr. Kourosh Maddahi always has an eye towards keeping his office at the forefront of dental technology. The most recent dental tools are always put to use by Dr. Maddahi and his assistants.  Every year, Dr. Maddahi and his staff receive training in the latest dental advances – they get three times as much training as is required! Not only do they frequently receive the latest cosmetic dentistry training, but they also update their equipment as new technology is released.

And of course, experience is a major factor in the quality of dentistry! Kourosh Maddahi, DDS, first began practicing dentistry in 1987.  Five thousand patients and over 21 years later, Dr. Maddahi is renowned as one of the leading cosmetic dentists of Los Angeles.

Through all these years he has refined his skills as a dentist and cultivated a friendly, relaxing office environment, providing his patients with the calm, considerate manner that comes of years of experience, and a certainty in the techniques of his profession.

As many people have had uncomfortable dental incidents in the past, Dr. Maddahi has created an aesthetic space, more akin to a spa than a dental office. Patients can drink tea, watch movies, and feel comfortable with a professional staff that has their overall pleasant experience in mind.

*Psychobiology is the application of the principles of biology to the study of mental processes and behavior. From this earliest time in his education, Dr. Maddahi wanted to understand how to help his fellow man through his interest and affinity for dentistry.

Answers to Dental Questions, the Ones You Always Wanted to Ask

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Our Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, top Los Angeles cosmetic dentist, answers the most asked questions about dental hygiene and dental health. Perhaps these are questions you have wondered, yourself?

Is it really important to brush your teeth after every meal?  “Ideally, we would all brush out teeth after every meal.  If you can’t brush after a meal, try chewing sugarless gum, to clean off the teeth.”

How often should I bleach?  “It is best not to bleach your teeth more often than once a week.  If you become aware of an increase in sensitivity, stop bleaching until all sensitivity has gone away.  Also, if you notice that your teeth begin to  look chalky white, it may mean they have been dehydrated due to too much bleaching. If you woudl like to have in-office tooth whitening in our Beverly Hills office, it takes only a few hours and is very thorough. ”

Is smoking bad for gums?   “Gum disease is characterized by inflamed gums that recede from the teeth and often leads to tooth loss.  And it has been proven that smokers are six times more likely to develop gum disease than non-smokers. Some researchers in England, observed a group of smokers with gum disease and found that the some of their symptoms improved in the ones who quit smoking during the study.”

Why is flossing important?  “Brushing alone does not remove all plaque from your teeth and plaque can lead to tooth decay.  Flossing removes the plaque in between the teeth where a toothbrush doe not reach and it also helps to remove food that is caught between the teeth.  Flossing can help to control bad breath, also.”

Should I brush or floss first?  “It is not important whether you floss first or brush first.  Do whichever seems most logical to you.  But do floss at least once a day for two to three minutes, to be most effective.”

What makes teeth sensitive, even if no decay exists?  “Sometimes the top layer of a tooth, the enamel, has been lost or lessened.  This being the protective layer of the teeth, if it is missing it allows heat, cold, acidic or sticky foods to stimulate the nerves and cells inside the tooth, causing hypersensitivity and some discomfort. Also, receding gums can be the cause of sensitivity.”

Beverly Hills dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, found overall health greatly affects the dental health of his patients.

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

“When the body is in strong health and the patient is physically doing well, their immune system does its job and fights off different bacteria and viruses.”, explains Beverly Hills dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi.  “Additionally, I have found, over and over, that when a person feels ill and tired, he is likely to put aside his dental health routines and then when feeling better, these vital oral care routines are more difficult to break back in.”

“That is why I stress healthy eating.”, he continues.  “I have several pages on my website listing the most important foods to eat for overall health.”   His first suggestion is to simply avoid foods with labels on them.  He warns that you’ll discover foods with labels have some type of additive, preservative, chemical or sweetener that offers absolutely on nutritional value for the body. He tells his patients to stick to fresh, natural, raw, whole foods and they are likely to become a much healthier person in the long run.

Of course, fruits and vegetables on first on his list.  Any that are frozen, (or dried fruit) are great, as there are usually no preservatives, additives or sweeteners added.  Dried beans, peas, lentils, canned legumes that are prepared without animal products or chemical additives are fine.  Grains should be whole grain products, free of sugar, chemical additives and preservatives. Whole grains include amaranth, barley, brown basmati rice, brown rice, buckwheat, bulgur, millet, oats and oatmeal, quinoa, rye, wheat, wild rice. Whole grain products include bread, muffins and tortillas.

Dr. Maddahi advises eating raw nuts including almonds, filberts, pine nuts and cashews (sparingly). Raw seeds include sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds.  For daily protein he suggests eggs from chickens that are hormone free, antibiotic free and fed all natural feed.  The meat and poultry portions should be only 1 – 4 ounces per serving from animals that are organically grain fed, chemical free and antibiotic free. Poultry choices are chicken, turkey and wild game. Once a week or less lean beef or lamb may be eaten.

It is best to avoid dairy products.  They can be replaced with soy yogurt, and non-dairy beverages and including rice, oat, soy and almond milk products.

He has found it to be smart to eat deep ocean fish which include salmon, sardines, mackerel, sea trout, red snapper, halibut, ocean perch, sole, albacore tuna, cod, flounder, swordfish, haddock,  and white tuna packed in water, with no oil, broth and no chemical additives.

Baked goods made with whole grain flours and no hydrogenated fats, may be snacked on. Baked potato chips or whole grain rice crackers can be infrequently eaten.  You want to avoid caffeine, of course and sodas, sticking to juices with no added sugar, natural teas, and lots of water.

The best  oils to use are extra virgin olive oil, raw organic flax seed oil, cold pressed or expeller pressed oils that include - canola oil, sesame oil and sunflower oil.  If you need a sweetener, use a natural sugar, all which are listed on Dr. Maddahi’s website.  The article can be found in the white pages that he offers on his website, articles that will help patients with oral health and dental care.

Why Have Dental Implants Exploded in Popularity?

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

This is a frequent topic when our Dr. Maddahi answers questions from the patients. What is it about this new item in cosmetic dentistry? Why are so many people thrilled to have dental implants instead of dentures?

Beverly Hills dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, suggests dental implants as the answer to missing teeth.  Implants are stable and permanent, which make talking, eating and smiling more enjoyable.

Offering a more natural look, feel and function and because they are permanently fixed in the mouth, the use of dental implants instead of bridges and dentures has exploded in popularity over the past several decades.

 Dental Implants

The back story on implants is that the scientific research that allowed dental implants to come into being began in the 1950’s with the discovery that metal titanium had an ability to bond with bone.  This very strong bond to surrounding bone is a process termed “osseointegration”, coming from the Latin wordosseus meaning “bony”.

After years of careful research and study, dental implants (titanium cylinders placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth) have been refined with high success rates. There are now patients who have had implant supported teeth for more than twenty-five years.  No more the need for dentures and bridges, it’s easier to eat, looks better and much more easily cared for.

”I tell my patients with missing teeth that they should consider dental implants.”, explains Dr. Maddahi.  “If you, like millions of Americans, have lost one or more teeth, you may be all too familiar with the unpleasant consequences. For many, missing teeth lead to an unattractive smile, embarrassment from loose dentures, and pain or difficulty with eating.  Traditional cosmetic dentistry can provide replacements for missing teeth using bridges, removable partials and dentures; however, each of these has its problems.”

Bridgework usually involves altering natural teeth to provide a stable foundation for support of replacement teeth. Partials and dentures can, at times, be very unstable, leading to denture sores or speech difficulties.  Another little known problem associated with tooth loss is a process known as ‘atrophy’, a shrinking of the jawbone that can progress over the years. Bone atrophy not only affects jaw function, but can cause adverse facial cosmetic changes.

Dental implants are an effective, safe and predictable solution to the problems resulting from missing teeth. Many patients report they like the look more, and state that the implants feel and function like natural teeth.

Dr. Maddahi likes to inform his patients of the basis of his choices. “Dental implants are substitutes for the roots of missing teeth. They act as an anchor for a replacement tooth or crown or a set of replacement teeth.  Replacing missing teeth is important to an individual’s general health and to the health of remaining teeth. Chewing ability is lost when a tooth is lost. Unreplaced teeth can cause other teeth to be lost, tipped or crowded and create subsequent problems. There are also the obvious problems of poor appearance and loss of self-esteem caused by one or more missing teeth.”
